PHE's core mission is to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of the UK and reduce health inequalities. Allied to that, PHE's Specialist Microbiology Services (now part of the National Infection Service for England) provides a comprehensive range of microbiological and serological tests and services (including genomics) for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of infectious diseases, and undertakes significant research and development in the same area e.g. the testing of novel vaccines and antimicrobials, and the evaluation of improved diagnostic tests for both established and emergent infections.
