Gebze Technical University (GTU) founded in Turkey in 1992. It is a university for graduate studies located in a specifically selected area in the Marmara Region. The institute aims to become an institution of learning whose priority is educating innovative and broad-minded researchers, thus establishing itself among the international science and technology producers and helping the Turkish industry gain a strong position in the competitive global arena. The University, which has been providing graduate programs in various fields in its four different faculties since 1994, started undergraduate programs in the Departments of Materials Science, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Physics as of 2001. All programs are supported in English (30%). GTU, which currently has 2000 undergraduate and 3000 graduate students, employs a total of 372 academic personnel. The University, which in 2006, employed 146 academic personnel who held doctoral degrees, has held the fourth place among all universities in Turkey, and the first place among the state universities for number of publications per person by having increased the number of scientific publications in international publications to 135 by 2005. Although it is a fairly new undergraduate institution, Gebze Technical University is on its way, with respect to the ratio of teaching staff of Ph.D. holders to the number of students, to becoming a prestigious university due to its excellent academic personnel and expansive technical infrastructure. There are 41 research laboratories, which are fully equipped with the latest in technology, as well as 4 research and application centers.
